NRL great Cooper Cronk says he is stunned Parramatta didn’t “move heaven and earth” to re-sign Reed Mahoney after the hooker joined the Bulldogs.

The 23-year-old informed Brad Arthur of his decision on Thursday morning, in a huge blow to the Eels’ retention attempts this off-season.

James Hooper reports Mahoney signed a four-year deal and Cronk believes Parramatta officials will be left scratching their heads.

“Reed Mahoney comes and adds a bit of spark in 2023 – big blow for Parramatta, huge blow,” Cronk said.

“That will obviously free up some money for them and I am not sure who they have in place but they need to have someone (at hooker) because they are in a premiership window and you will struggle to do it without recognised spine members.

“I reckon Parramatta would be scratching their heads, he seems to me to be on the field he is courageous he is tough, always putting his body on the line and they are the type of guys you can really form a good core around.

“He is obviously young, on the fringe of playing origin last year – but the Bulldogs have obviously struck hot and got their guy.”

Cronk also believes that the Dogs’ new signing could be a future captain.

“Take performance out of the equation, I think Reed Mahoney has got a really good temperament, looks like a really good kid and someone you really can help instil a humble, hardworking culture so I would have thought Parramatta would have tried to move heaven and earth to keep him,” Cronk explained.

“Off the field too he seems like he could be a future captain.

“It is very strange that Parramatta; I know it’s delicate trying to balance the salary cap, but I would have thought he would have been a high priority and no doubt he was but someones taken him away from them.”

While it is a huge coup for the Bulldogs for 2023 and it will boost morale for a potential finals run in years to come, Cronk believes it doesn’t change anything for next season.

“I don’t think it changes much for the dogs this year, I think while they have recruited well, they have recruited a lot of attacking players so it is probably an area they really need to address in terms of scoring points and being more creative, but that doesn’t change this year,” he said.
