Newcastle legend Alan Shearer discusses the club takeover

Newcastle United have been told by Danny Mills that there is not “anyone better” than Jose Mourinho to be appointed as their next manager.

The Magpies are said to be on the lookout for a new boss following their successful takeover last week, despite Steve Bruce still being in the dugout.

It is believed that the club’s new owners want a change of direction in the hotseat and replacing Bruce looks set to be their first major piece of business.

Former England international Mills believes that Mourinho would be the ideal candidate to be appointed at St. James’s Park, despite currently being under contract at Italian club Roma.

The Portuguese boss has a wealth of experience of management in the Premier League, with two spells at the helm of Chelsea before stints at Manchester United and Tottenham respectively.

Mourinho won three league titles during his separate stints with the Blues but enjoyed less success when at United and Spurs.

He won the League Cup and Europa League titles in his debut season at Old Trafford in the 2016-17 campaign but departed after two-and-a-half seasons with United sixth in the standings.

Mourinho was appointed at Tottenham the following year but despite guiding them to the EFL Cup final and his side leading the Premier League in the opening months, a swift deterioration in form saw his dismissal in April.

Mourinho was sacked by Spurs in April

The boss was appointed Roma head coach this summer but he has now been suggested as the new Magpies manager ahead of their seemingly inevitable investment.

Mills told talkSPORT on Thursday: “If you’re talking about being given money to build a team and be relatively successful, I’d go with Mourinho.

“If you give Jose enough money and allow him to do what he wants to do, he will guide you to success quicker than probably anyone else.

“Newcastle can go slowly and survive this season, next season finish in the top half, then top six. But If they want to jump from survival to top four, I don’t see anyone better out there than Mourinho to do that.

“You’d have to give him absolute fortunes to buy the players that he wants, but he’s one of the only coaches that could do that.

“He could put a team together next week that will be successful, he could do it in the January transfer window. The football might not be brilliant but he’ll get you winning games that’s for sure.”

Mourinho has enjoyed a trophy-laden managerial career spanning the past two decades with his highlights including guiding both FC Porto and Inter to Champions League trophies in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

He also guided Real Madrid to the title in La Liga in 2011/12 but his last league title for any club was with Chelsea in 2015.
