Neville urges Premier League to reject Arsenal’s postponement request

The former Manchester United defender was speaking ahead of Friday night’s Premier League meeting between Crystal Palace and Brighton, only hours after Arsenal revealed they had has asked for their game with Tottenham to be delayed.

While Neville did stress that his comments were not a “dig” at Arsenal in particular, he urged Premier League clubs to fulfill their fixtures unless there are major Covid outbreaks within their camps.

“I honestly believe that all teams, not just in the Premier League but the EFL now must be made to play their fixtures,” he said.

“[Folarin] Balogun’s gone on loan, [Ainsley] Maitland-Niles has gone on loan, [Granit] Xhaka’s got a red card – that’s not the fault of anybody else.

“We can’t be calling fixtures off. If it was purely down to Covid and extraordinary circumstances where there were 10 or 15 players out [it would be acceptable].

“But, we’re now talking about teams in the last few weeks where there’s no doubt they’ve been calling games off whether they think they’ve got the best squad or best team to win a game.

“It’s got to stop. That’s not a dig at Arsenal, I should have spoken three or four weeks ago. Manchester United, other teams, have got 30-40 players in their squad.

“I’m not having they can’t get 14. 15, 16 players together and, so for me, it should be rejected.”
