Ralf Rangnick previews Aston Villa clash

Interim Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick is set to welcome Cristiano Ronaldo back to his starting line-up as the Red Devils prepare to face Aston Villa for the second time in the space of five days.

United progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a narrow win over Villa on Monday, though Rangnick’s men were uninspiring for much of the clash at Old Trafford.

Rangnick’s side have the chance to put that poor performance behind them on Saturday evening when they travel to Villa Park, needing to win to keep pace with their top four rivals.

The Red Devils currently sit seventh in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-place West Ham, with Arsenal and Tottenham also in the race for the last Champions League qualification spot.

But Rangnick has been handed a triple boost in his hopes of guiding United to a win with the news that Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho are all in contention to play.

“I think they will be available. They only trained for the first time, Cristiano yesterday, Harry I think the day before yesterday,” he said.

“So as it seems now we have to wait for the final training session this afternoon but as it seems right now they should be available for tomorrow.”

Their returns from injury means that Rangnick should be able to select his strongest possible starting XI.

David de Gea has been one of the few bright spots for United this season, with the Spanish keeper returning to form.

He has cemented his place as United’s number one over Dean Henderson, and will continue in goal for the trip to Villa Park.

With Diogo Dalot reportedly on United’s transfer list, that could see Aaron Wan-Bissaka return to the starting line-up.

Wan-Bissaka was left on the bench for Monday’s clash with Villa, but had started United’s two Premier League games before that and will expect to reclaim his place at right-back.

Maguire’s return to fitness is welcome news for Rangnick, who will be able to select his strongest centre-back pairing.

United captain Maguire should partner Raphael Varane at the heart of defence, with the duo having a mostly exemplary record when playing together.

While he has been far from the form that he was in last season, Luke Shaw appears to have beaten Alex Telles in the race to keep Rangnick’s first-choice left-back and should continue there on Saturday.

Scott McTominay was man of the match in the FA Cup win over Villa, scoring the winner, and will be expected to continue in central midfield alongside Fred.

United badly lacked creativity in midfield against Villa, but Bruno Fernandes will likely continue in one of the two spots ahead of the defensive midfield pairing.

And despite disappointing performances this season, Mason Greenwood should take the other position behind the strikers.

Spearheading United’s attack will be Rangnick’s strongest pairing, with Ronaldo set to partner Edinson Cavani.
