Manchester United’s search for an interim manager appears to be over, with Ralf Rangnick on the verge of a move to Old Trafford.

The German, who has been working as head of sport and development at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow, is expected to take over from caretaker boss Michael Carrick on a role until the end of the season.

Under United’s plans, Rangnick would reportedly stay on board for a further two years in a consultancy role in order to help with the club’s transition to a new permanent manager, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that he was talked round after rejecting an initial approach.

News of the appointment comes just days after the dismissal of previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and would represent a first managerial role for the 63-year-old since he left RB Leipzig in 2019.

Rangnick spent more than 20 years managing in Germany, including stints with Schalke and Hoffenheim before his arrival in Leipzig.

Over that period, he came into contact with a number of managers who would go on to spend time in the Premier League, including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp’s first Bundesliga title coincided with Rangnick’s second Schalke stint, and the Reds boss has spoken highly of the incoming manager in the past.

“One of the best, if not the best German coach” is how Klopp has described Rangnick.

Klopp also asked the advice of his compatriot before opting to bring Ibrahima Konate from Leipzig to Anfield, according to reporter and former footballer Guido Schafer.

“Rangnick told Jurgen ‘when you are able to buy both [Konate and then-teammate Dayot Upamecano], buy both’,” Schafer said

“They are both skilful players but the greater talent and the better player is Konate – he is outstanding.”

Schafer, who also played with Klopp at Mainz, has claimed Rangnick inspired Klopp’s style.

“It’s not a copy of the style [completely] but Klopp said ‘I want to play with young, fast players’ and players who don’t ask ‘why should I run so much?’,” he said in 2020.

“Jurgen said ‘we have to invest more in a match than Bayern Munich and because of this investment, Dortmund won the title in Germany twice.”

Rangnick, who was close to moving to AC Milan in 2020, is not expected to take over at Old Trafford in time for their next match.

Caretaker Michael Carrick due to remain in the dugout for the Premier League trip to Chelsea, where defeat could see the Red Devils fall 15 points behind the league leaders.

United are keeping their options open ahead of making a permanent appointment at the end of the season, but Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino remains a leading candidate for the position.
