‘Christmas Spectacular’: NBA world goes CRAZY for ‘flamethrower’ Mills’ historic masterclass

Patty Mills is built for the big stage, and in the NBA, it doesn’t get much bigger than Christmas Day (Boxing Day AEDT).

The Aussie superstar blew up for an equal-career high 34 points in the Brooklyn Nets’ road win over the LA Lakers 122-115.

It included a scorching-hot 11-of-17 shooting effort from the field with eight three-pointers — the the latter the most ever made on Christmas Day while bringing up his 100th triple for the season — along with a season-high seven assists.

NBA XMAS WRAP: ‘Will never win a championship’ — Red-hot Patty exposes Lakers’ $126m ‘Westbrick’ problem

Mills was dialled in from the opening tip, scoring 15 of his 34 points in the first quarter alone to set the tone for the Nets in enemy territory as they maintained a healthy lead for most of the contest.

“Patty Mills has been very good everywhere he’s gone, also including how special he is in international basketball,” ESPN commentator Mark Jackson said.

Jeff Van Gundy added: “He was great for Australia this summer.”

Mills drilled a massive three-pointer in the fourth quarter to extend the Nets’ led to 107-84 as it was seemingly all but over, only for the Lakers to storm back into the game with a 17-0 run behind LeBron James.

But Mills answered with a crucial triple down the other end when the Nets needed it most — something he’s built a reputation off recently — before hitting another inside the final two minutes to bring up his career-high scoring effort.

The Nets managed to hang on down the stretch despite the Lakers’ and James’ best efforts.

For Mills and the Nets to pull of such a feat without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving among widespread Covid absences against a red-hot James is some sort of spectacular performance as the team improved to 22-9 on the season to remain first in the East.
