Biden may use military powers to increase oil refining

Date: July 6, 2022 3:17 am

The head of the US Department of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, did not rule out that US President Joe Biden could use the law on military products to increase the volume of oil refining in the country. The head of the department announced it on Wednesday, June 22, at a regular briefing at the White House.

The Secretary of Energy of the United States also recalled that on Thursday, June 23, she plans to meet with representatives of the largest oil refineries in the United States to analyze their actions in the face of a record increase in gasoline prices in the state.

“We know that six refineries have been closed since 2020, we want to ask if there is an opportunity to bring something back into operation, to expand production,” Granholm said.

The law on the production of military goods during the Korean War allows the head of state to expand the production of certain products for national security purposes and, in effect, establish control over sectors of the civilian economy, TASS writes.

The day before, US leader Joe Biden said that the US and the EU understood that the imposition of sanctions against Russia could not pass without consequences for the energy market.
